Our 4 Year Curriculum
We offer residents a unique four year curriculum to become better prepared to provide patient care within an increasingly complex medical environment. Our program offers several key advantages to students who are considering applying to residency in family medicine. First and foremost, we will provide them with the opportunity to master the specialty of family medicine in more depth than the traditional three year residency. Second, our residents will have an opportunity to learn in our 3 NCQA-recognized patient-centered medical homes and develop real practice skills now rather than after leaving the program. And last, the additional year provides them with a chance to pursue their passions, the specialty interests that generally cannot be pursued due to the constraints of the three year program.
The family medicine residency program faculty have embraced our four year curriculum because of the way it brings out the focus and dedication of a resident. The students they will now have under their wings will have an even greater desire to be better trained. They will have an opportunity to learn new skills that will prepare them for the future - preparation that simply cannot be attained in a three year setting. Bottom line: Residents will leave knowing that they are a better family physician.
Middlesex Hospital has been an innovative national leader in extended curricula for almost a decade. The nation’s first comprehensive 4 year residency in Family Medicine, we participated in the P4 (Preparing the Personal Physician for Practice) national demonstration program from 2006-2012. Beginning in 2013, we have been joined by 13 other programs in the ACGME Length of Training Pilot Project with a goal of demonstrating the value of 4 year curricula on a national scale and informing the future direction of residency training in Family Medicine.
Why Four Years?
Our residency program includes a fourth year of some of the most innovative learning experiences a resident can find anywhere, including our Tracks of Excellence.
