Dr. Shields joined the residency program in 1991 after fifteen years of private family practice in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire. His practice included all aspects of family medicine with particular emphasis on maternal and child health. While on the staff of Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, he served in a number of capacities, including President of the Medical Staff, Chief of Obstetrics, Chief of Pediatrics, and Chief of Psychiatry. His commitment to community health is longstanding. While earning a Masters Degree in Economics, Dr. Shields completed a thesis on An Econometric Model of Rural Poverty. He brings to the residency program extensive practice-based experience in both normal and complicated obstetrics, maternal and child health, procedural medicine and integrative medicine. He is the first physician to incorporate water births as well as other innovations into the practice of obstetrics at Middlesex Hospital. Dr. Shields is an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and a Clinical Instructor at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Shields leads the Integrative Medicine Track.
