P4 Program

The P4 Initiative - Preparing the Personal Physician for Practice - offers residents a unique fourth year opportunity to become better prepared to provide patient care within an increasingly challenging medical environment. Our program offers several key advantages to students who are considering applying to residency in family medicine. First and foremost, we will provide them with the opportunity to master the specialty of family medicine in more depth than the traditional three year residency. Second, our residents will have an opportunity to learn in a new model practice and develop real practice skills now rather than after leaving the program. And last, the additional year provides them with a chance to pursue their passions, the specialty interests that generally cannot be pursued due to the constraints of the three year program.

The family medicine residency program faculty have embraced the P4 Initiative because of the way it brings out the focus and dedication of a resident. The students they will now have under their wings will have an even greater desire to be better trained. They will have an opportunity to learn new skills that will prepare them for the future - preparation that simply cannot be attained in a three year setting. Bottom line: Residents will leave knowing that they are a better family physician.

Out of nearly 460 residency programs from across the country, the Middlesex Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program was one of just 14 selected to participate in P4. We are very proud of this honor, and we eagerly look ahead to the positive growth that family medicine training will provide future residents.

At the Middlesex Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, we expect our residents to leave with two valuable assets. The first is having the confidence to handle the day-to-day situations they will see in a family medicine office. Second, when they encounter an unexpected situation, we expect them to have the confidence and clinical skills to develop a sound approach to managing it. Those skills are dependent upon a resident's ability to keep up with the advances in family medicine - a trait they will carry with them into the practice setting.

Navigating a residency program can be a balancing act of learning, hands on experience, confidence-building and down time. The flexibility of our program and the P4 Initiative will allow residents the opportunities they need to build on their skills, to provide better outcomes for patients, and to become more confident to take that next step into practice.
